5th Ward, Alicia Holman

GFP_7610.jpgCouncilwoman Alicia Holman is a lifelong resident of East Orange, New Jersey. Born the youngest of five children to James and Evelyn Holman, Councilwoman Holman learned at an early age the importance of community service. She attended the East Orange School System and is a graduate of Clifford J. Scott High School. She attended undergraduate studies at Bloomfield College and Rutgers University.

At the age of eighteen, Alicia became active in the political arena. Her campaign experience includes supporting several local races. She has also been heavily involved in Essex County and State Committee initiatives and has served as an East Orange Democratic County Committee member in the 5th Ward, 7th District for over 20 years. In 2002, she was selected by her colleagues to serve as the Chairwoman of the 5th Ward East Orange Democratic County Committee, a position she still currently holds.

In November 2005, Councilwoman Holman was elected to the East Orange City Council after fifteen years of community service. As the proud mother of her only child, Quianna and surrogate mother to her niece and nephew, Councilwoman Holman believes strongly in providing the children of East Orange with safe havens and recreational facilities needed to improve and enrich their daily lives.

She introduced legislation to implement a Golf Advisory Board, which designed a “First Tee” program. The program illustrates to youngsters the basics of how to play golf. In addition, she introduced legislation to create a Recreation Advisory Board; which has worked diligently with other City Government Offices to implement improvements throughout recreational parks in the city with new equipment, walk paths, and basketball courts. The long standing relationship with the New Jersey Nets has proved to be vital during Councilwoman Holman’s tenure as well. The city received a Fun & Fitness Center for our youth and adults.

In 2015, Councilwoman Holman was elected by her colleagues to serve as the President of City Council. As a strong advocate for public safety, Councilwoman Holman supported new hires and promotions for the police and fire departments, which resulted in several officers promoted to the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, Chief within the Police Department; and promotion of Captains, Deputy Chief and Chief within the Fire Department, and in 2016 a new position of~ Public Safety Director.

Councilwoman Holman currently serves as Chairwoman of the Law & Legislation Committee. She has also served on the Arts, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Committee, Finance Committee, Public Safety, Policy, Planning & Grants, Health & Education, Housing, License & Inspection, Business Development & Zoning and Public Works.

Professionally, Councilwoman Holman works for the County of Essex within the Department of Citizen Services as a Youth Program Development Specialist.

Councilwoman Holman is also a member of the Abyssinian Baptist Church where Rev. Dr. Perry Simmons, Jr. is her Pastor, where she has participated with the Abyssinian Sisters United Mentoring Program and the Women of Purpose.

In her spare time, Councilwoman Holman spends time volunteering for a number of charitable organizations through the year. During the Thanksgiving holiday, she assisted Bethel Presbyterian Church with their community outreach program in feeding over four hundred people. She worked with a local Toy for Tots program. Councilwoman Holman has also served on the Community Development Institute Head Start Programs’ Policy Council and the Essex County Youth Investment Council.
